Social decisions under risk. Evidence from the Probabilistic Dictator Game
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reports results of a ’probabilistic dictator game’ experiment in which subjects had to allocate chances to win a prize between themselves and a dummy player. We have manipulated (within subjects) two aspects of the game: the relative values of the prizes (being equal for the two players, higher for the dictator or higher for the dummy) and the nature of the lottery determining the earnings: we used independent draws for the two players (’noncompetitive’ condition) or a single draw (’competitive’ condition). We have also asked for decisions in a standard, non-probabilistic, setting. Main results can be summarized as follows: First, a substantial fraction of subjects do share chances to win, also in the competitive treatments, thus showing concern for the other player that cannot be explained by outcome-based inequality aversion or quasi-maximin models. Second, this concern hardly ever leads to equalizing expected payoffs. Third, subjects appear to be somewhat efficiency-oriented, as they share more when partner’s prize is relatively high.

On the Validity of (Cost-Saving) Randomization Methods in Dictator-Game Experiments: A Systematic Test
Motivated by methodological concerns, theoretical considerations, and evidence from previous studies, this paper makes a contribution to conducting dictator-game experiments under resource constraints. Using a holistic and strictly controlled approach, we systematically assess the validity of common cost-saving dictator-game variants. We include five common approaches and compare them to a stan...
متن کاملSelf-Signaling Versus Social-Signaling in Giving
I investigate the relative importance of social-signaling versus self-signaling in driving giving. I derive specific qualitative predictions about how the response of an image-motivated dictator to a change in the probability that her choice will be implemented depends crucially on the information available to the relevant observer. A probabilistic dictator-game experiment tests the joint, rela...
متن کاملFairness in Risky Environments: Theory and Evidence
The relationship between risk in the environment, risk aversion and inequality aversion is not well understood. Theories of fairness have typically assumed that pie sizes are known ex-ante. Pie sizes are, however, rarely known ex ante. Using two simple allocation problems—the Dictator and Ultimatum game—we explore whether, and how exactly, unknown pie sizes with varying degrees of risk (“endowm...
متن کاملPonti Social vs . risk preferences under the veil of ignorance
This paper reports experimental evidence from a Dictator Game experiment in which subjects choose repeatedly one out of four options involving a pair of fixed monetary prizes, one for them, one for another anonymously matched subject. In some sessions, player position (i.e. the identity of the best paid agent, constant across all options) is known in advance before subjects have to make their d...
متن کاملDictating the risk – experimental evidence on giving in risky environments
We study if and how social preferences extend to risky environments. We provide experimental evidence from different versions of dictator games with risky outcomes, and establish that preferences that are exclusively based on ex post or on ex ante comparisons cannot generate the observed behavioral patterns. The more money decision-makers transfer in the standard dictator game, the more likely ...
